Gentle Tooth Extractions for Children
When a Tooth Needs to Come Out
Sometimes a tooth needs to be removed, and that is okay. Whether it is a stubborn baby tooth that will not fall out, a tooth damaged beyond repair, or a tooth that needs removal to support proper alignment, our board-certified pediatric dentists handle extractions with a calm, no-judgment approach.
We always explore every option before recommending an extraction. When it is the right call, we make sure your child understands what to expect, feels comfortable throughout, and leaves without feeling like it was a big deal.
Reasons a Child May Need an Extraction
We will always explain why we are recommending an extraction and what the alternatives are before moving forward. Common reasons include:
- Blocking Permanent Teeth: A baby tooth that is preventing an adult tooth from erupting.
- Shark Teeth: When a permanent tooth begins growing in behind a baby tooth that hasn't fallen out yet.
- Severe Decay: Damage that cannot be treated with a filling, crown, or pulpotomy.
- Infection: An abscess or infection that has progressed beyond other treatment options.
- Orthodontics: Overcrowding in preparation for orthodontic treatment or Invisalign.
- Trauma: A tooth damaged by injury that cannot be restored.
Keeping Your Child Comfortable
We take thoughtful steps to reduce anxiety and ensure your child feels safe. Before any injection, we apply a compounded topical anesthetic to numb the surface of the gum. Unlike standard numbing gel, our compounded formula is specially prepared to work more effectively and more quickly, so your child barely feels the injection. Once the area is fully numb, your child will feel gentle pressure but should not feel pain.
For children who need additional support, we offer nitrous oxide (laughing gas) and oral sedation options. You can learn more about how sedation works and when it is appropriate here (link to sedation page). Every treatment room also has ceiling-mounted TVs so your child can watch their favorite show throughout the procedure. We use Tell-Show-Do to walk your child through every step in kid-friendly language.
What to Expect During the Procedure
Pediatric tooth extractions are typically brief procedures when performed by specialists trained specifically in children’s dental anatomy and behavior management. Before we begin, we use digital imaging to assess the tooth and root structure. Once the area is numb, the procedure itself usually takes just a few minutes. We move at a pace that keeps your child comfortable, and parents are always welcome to stay for the entire visit.
After the Extraction
few things to expect and watch for at home:
- Apply Pressure: Bite gently on gauze for 30 to 45 minutes to help a blood clot form and protect the healing site.
- Cold, Soft Foods: Yogurt, applesauce, smoothies, and mashed potatoes are ideal for the first 24 hours.
- No Straws: Avoid straws, spitting, or forceful rinsing for 24 hours. Suction can dislodge the healing clot.
- Take it Easy: Encourage a low-key afternoon with minimal physical activity.
- Salt Water Rinses: After 24 hours, gentle salt water rinses help keep the area clean.
- Mild Swelling: Slight swelling or tenderness is normal for the first 24 hours.
- Pain Relief: Age-appropriate over-the-counter pain medication can be used as directed if needed.

What About the Space Left Behind?
When a baby tooth is removed early, neighboring teeth can drift into the gap, potentially creating alignment concerns. We will discuss whether a space maintainer is right for your child before you leave, and take care of everything right here at Treetop.
Every Brave Patient Deserves a Reward
Extractions take courage, and we recognize that. Every child who gets through an extraction at Treetop ends their visit at our legendary toy wall. Because getting through something hard deserves recognition, every single time.
