Board-certified pediatric dentistry in New Braunfels
Is dental anesthesia safe for kids?
If Dr. Brandon or Dr. Jillian ever mentions sedation, your first reaction might be worry. That’s completely normal.
Questions about anesthesia are some of the most common ones we hear from parents, and we think that’s a good thing. Here’s what we want every Treetop family to know.
When does a child need anesthesia?
Most kids do just fine without any sedation beyond numbing gel and local anesthetic. But there are situations where anesthesia helps a child get the care they need safely and without distress.
- Very young children who can't hold still safely for treatment
- Special health care needs that require additional support
- Significant dental anxiety that makes cooperative care impossible
- Extensive treatment that needs to be completed safely in one visit
Anesthesia isn’t a shortcut. It’s a tool that protects your child while we do our job well. We always start with the least invasive option available, including nitrous oxide (laughing gas) when appropriate.
Is dental anesthesia safe?
Anesthesia for children carries real risks, and we would never tell you otherwise. What makes it safe is the training of the team, the protocols in place, and the continuous monitoring used throughout.
When anesthesia is recommended, a dedicated dental anesthesiologist is present to continuously monitor your child, so our team can focus fully on safe, effective care.
- Two trained providers, always: National guidelines require at least two people trained in advanced life support to be present for any deep sedation. One is the treating dentist. The other is an independent qualified observer.
- Board-certified expertise Dr. Brandon and Dr. Jillian completed multi-year pediatric residencies that included sedation training as a core part of the curriculum. Not all dentists have this.
- Child-specific protocols We review your child's medical history, current medications, and weight before every sedation appointment. Every plan is customized. Nothing is one-size-fits-all.
What parents worry about most
None of these concerns are unreasonable. We’ve heard every one of them.
Will my child wake up scared?
We monitor your child continuously and stay with them through recovery until they are fully alert, able to swallow, and breathing comfortably. You’ll be right there.
Could this affect brain development?
The FDA has noted concerns about certain anesthetics in children under 3, especially for procedures over three hours. Our doctors discuss this directly with families of very young children before anything is scheduled.
What if something goes wrong?
Our team is trained in pediatric emergency response. We use hospital-grade monitoring equipment and follow strict safety protocols designed specifically for children’s physiology.
Can I be in the room?
We’ll walk you through exactly what to expect before we start. You’ll know where to be and what’s happening at every step. Calm, informed parents help children feel safer.
What to expect on the day
You’ll receive instructions a few days before the appointment. Here’s how the day typically goes:
Before
Clear fasting instructions, pre-op health review, and a chance to ask any last-minute questions before we get started.
During
Continuous monitoring in a calm, private space. Our team is focused entirely on your child from start to finish.
After
Your child is monitored until fully alert before discharge. You go home with written instructions and a number to call if anything feels off.
Starting the conversation
If you’ve been told your child needs sedation and you’re not sure what to do next, call us. We’ll talk through the recommendation, explain why we think it’s the right path, and help you decide together. No pressure, no rush.
