Dr. Brandon here – I wanted to share this article from USA Today that I recently came across regarding the “epidemic” levels of childhood tooth decay our society is currently experiencing. This article is a good resource for parents wishing to better understand the causes and early intervention steps necessary to help prevent this problem from developing.
Some quick statistics from this article that also ring true for me in my experience as a pediatric dentist:
The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) says –
- 42% of children ages 2 to 11 have had cavities in baby teeth
- 21% of those ages 6 to 11 have had cavities in permanent teeth
In addition, the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) has recently initiated a new educational campaign aimed at parents and caregivers, you can read more at this website: https://www.mychildrensteeth.org
